The BTR-60 was developed in the 1950's a replacement for older wheeled armoured personnel carriers and was first reveled in 1961. BTR stands for Bronetransporter (БТР, Бронетранспортер, literally "armoured transporter")

Designed to replace older open-topped APCs the BTR-60 was fully enclosed giving it's passengers increased protection from enemy artillery (and grenades). Unlike other contemporary designs where the passengers exited out rear doors the BTR-60 had overhead hatches for passengers to exit and then jump or climb down from. The BTR-60 was also armed with a 14.5mm machine-gun and coaxial 7.62mm machine-gun in a small turret that was operated by a specialist gunner. The driver (who sat on the left) and commander (on the right) were in the hull of the vehicle.

5x IS-2 Tanks

The IS (Iosif Stalin) heavy tank is often referred to as the “tank of victory” in Soviet sources. The development of the IS series of tanks started in late 1942 as a response to the performance of the German Tiger tanks, and then the arrival of the Panther in 1943 imparted further urgency.

The IS-2 heavy tank was designed to replace the aging KV tanks as the Guards’ heavy breakthrough units. The KV series were criticized by their crews for their low mobility, and lack of any heavier armament than that of the T-34 medium tank.

5x SU-100 Tanks

German use of assault guns that combined excellent armour and firepower with ease of manufacturing prompted the Soviets to begin the design of their own models. The reliable T-34 chassis was selected as one of the options to begin design work and by 1942 the SU-122, armed with a 122mm howitzer, was rolling off the production lines.

Continuous improvements in design resulted in first the SU-85, featuring the same 85mm gun as the T-34/85, and then the SU-100 which entered service in October 1944. In addition to the improved firepower, the SU-100 also had much thicker armour than its predecessors. This significantly improved the performance on the battlefield as well as making it popular with its crews.

4x T-34/85 Tanks

The T-34 series of tanks were widely recognised as an excellent design that had a profound effect on not only the course of World War II, but subsequent tank development for a long time. Over time the original specifications were refined to not only make the tank easier to produce, but also keep up with the need for increased firepower as enemy tank designs caught up and eventually surpassed the T-34.

The T-34/85 built upon an already successful design with increased armour protection. A larger turret was also added to accomodate a third crew member (previously in the hull) and increase the size of gun from 76mm to the more powerful ZiS-S-53 85mm. These improvements gave Soviet forces a tank that was once again more armoured, mobile, and destructive than its contemporaries.

5x T-54-1 or T-44 Tanks

The T-44 was heavily influential on the design of the T-54-1, the first model of the T-54 main battle tank. However, the T-44 still used the same 85mm tank gun as the T-34-85 medium tank. The Soviet army wanted a tank armed with a more powerful 100mm gun.

Shortly after the T-44 design was completed, unsuccessful efforts were made to fit the 100mm gun to the T-44 turret. Instead, a new roomier turret that could fit the larger gun was designed. In addition to the improved firepower, designers were able to increase the turret and hull armour.

Engineer-Sappers are the elite arm of the Red Army’s engineer corps. These well-trained engineering assault troops are called on to overcome the most difficult enemy defences. Assault groups are formed based upon the nature of the enemy defences faced by the advancing Soviet army.

The role of the ISU-122 and ISU-152 is as direct fire artillery, closely following the advance to knock out enemy guns and dug-in infantry. They can also fire bombardments at great ranges and are very effective tank killers. They are well-protected against most anti-tank guns and their thick top armour makes it hard for artillery fire or infantry anti-tank grenades to damage it.

The Red Army was a world leader in the field of rocketry. They used truck-mounted salvo rocket launchers against the Germans right from the start of the war. These saturated a large area with explosives, quickly pinning down the enemy and causing widespread casualties

The KV-1 heavy tank is one of the most heavily-armoured tanks in the world, with up to 120mm (4.7 inches) of cast steel armour on the turret. Few enemy tanks (or even anti-tank guns) have any chance of penetrating its thick hide.

With Leningrad surrounded, the ambitious production plan for the KV-3 heavy tank was curtailed until a new plant could be established in the Tankograd complex in the Urals. If the plan had not been changed, production of the KV-3 could have finally got under way in 1942. The first KV-3 tanks would have been ready for the Summer offensives. With their over-taxed supercharged engines, there were likely to have been technical problems at the beginning. However, by the time of Operation Uranus, the battle to surround Stalingrad, their could have been many more of them in place of the KV-1s that actually fought there.

The design of the KV-5 was almost complete by August 1941 and production of the prototype had begun when the approaching German Army forced the design team to evacuate to the Urals. The proposed tank was huge, and weighed 100 tons.The crew of six had plenty of room, but they were widely separated. Both the driver-mechanic and the radio operator/machine-gunner had separate compartments, the driver with their own vision cupola, and the machine-gunner with a rotating machine-gun cupola. The turret was large for its four man crew, with machine-gun cupola on top manned by one of the two loaders.

The 45mm obr 1942 gun is the standard Soviet anti-tank weapon, with each motor rifle battalion fielding a small company of them. These small, light-weight guns keep enemy medium tanks from assaulting the infantry and pick off unwary tanks that expose their flanks.

Contains five M4 Shermans (Late 75mm OR Late 76mm) and one Decal Sheet.

The Soviets preferred the diesel Sherman as their Soviet-built tanks were also diesel-powered. Consequently, they were the largest user of the M4A2 with 76mm gun. Its characteristics were comparable to those of the T-34/85, making it a very effective tank.
