The Tiger (P), or VK 45.01 P was the losing competitor in the German Heavy Tank trial, it lost out to the Henschel design VK 45.01 H, which eventually became the Tiger I, although they both had the same turret supplied by Krupp. The nickname ‘Tiger’ was actually coined by Porsche, and Hitler liked the name, so it was then known as the Tiger tank, despite the Porsche design losing.

The Tiger was developed as a breakthrough tank, intended to smash its way through a fortified enemy line. It was heavily armoured and well-armed with a version of the 8.8cm FlaK36 anti-aircraft gun. Wide tracks, and interleaved suspension with 16 large road wheels on each side gives this monster almost as good mobility as a medium tank.

The design of this tank is reminiscent of the tanks from the First World War. That is because this design was the second to come out of the Special Vehicle Development Committee (nicknamed "The Old Gang" as it was made up of people who had worked on the original British tanks of the First World War). Ordered in 1940, built by Fosters of Lincoln, the prototype ran for the first time in March 1941. For "initial trials" it was fitted with a mock-up turret with a dummy gun and later with a simplified turret mounting a QF 3-inch 16 cwt anti-tank gun. In 1942 it was given a turret that was under development for the Cruiser Mk VIII Challenger tank design with the QF 17-pounder (76.2 mm) gun. It went through successful trials in May 1943 but there was no further development after that.

Tank now comes with parts to make the 20mm armed Toldi I or II or the 40mm armed Toldi IIa.

The Toldi is an adaptation of the Swedish L-60 Landsverk light tank and was imported to Hungarian in 1937 by the MÁVAG Company with support from the Ministry of Defence. It was trialled against the Hungarian designed V-4 amphibious light tank built by the Manfred Weiss Company.

In trials it proved itself better than the V-4, which had a number of teething problems. A number of design changes were sought by the Army Staff before the L-60 could be adopted for production. They recommended that the steering, transmission, vision, ventilation and suspension all be improved.

The licences to produce the L-60 was purchased off Landsverk by MÁVAG and Ganz and the new tank was designated the 38M Toldi I light tank.

The ministry of defence ordered 40 from each company and production began in 1939.

Despite the Army Staff’s recommendations the Toldi design remained almost identical to the L-60 except the main armament was changed to the 36M 20mm Solothurn anti-tank rifle and secondary machine-gun became the 34/37AM.

The first 80 tanks were assembled in Hungary from Hungarian, Swedish and German parts, but production was entirely from Hungarian sources by 1941. After initial problems with production the first two tanks were delivered to the 2nd Motorised Rifle brigade in April 1940.

The Toldi II was produced from 1941 and differed in only the type of radio fitted, the Toldi I was fitted with the R-5 radio with a arched aerial, while the R-5/a radio of the Toldi II mounted a straight aerial.

By the end of 1942 190 Toldi I & II tanks armed with the 20mm gun had been produced. After extensive combat experience in Russia an upgrade and re-design program was started in 1943.

The Universal Carrier can be modified and used many ways hence its name. Some carriers were used as recon vehicles, others as MMG Carriers. The Wasp Carrier was modified to carry a hull mounted flame-thrower. Being mounted on a carrier means the Wasps can keep up with the troops and provide much needed fire support.

Britain and Canada shipped over 3000 Valentine tanks to the Soviet Union as part of their lend-lease aid. The Valentine was not fast, but it was well armoured and capable of long marches. It was so well liked that, when the Soviet Union eventually ceased production of light tanks, they continued to request shipments of Valentines to fill their need for light tanks.

The Volksgrenadier divisions are among the first to receive a new generation of infantry guns. The 7.5cm PaK50 is a more sophisticated gun based on the 5cm PaK38 breach with a new 7.5cm gun barrel on the light 5cm PaK38 trail. It has almost the same power as the 7.5cm PaK40, but uses a large muzzle brake to prevent the weapon being ripped apart every time it fires. PaK50 infantry gun is lighter, being based on the trail of the 5cm PaK38 anti-tank gun. They are highly mobile, so they can keep up with and support assaults with direct fire of high-explosives or by firing bombardments to keep the enemy's heads down.
