Kings of War is a mass-battle fantasy miniatures game, written by Alessio Cavatore and produced by Mantic Games. In Kings of War, massive armies of miniatures do battle on the tabletop, moving, fighting, shooting and casting magic to outmanoeuvre and outmuscle the opposition.

The game is governed by a set of easy to learn and intuitive rules, designed with simplicity in mind. You will never act in your opponent’s turn, meaning there is no time wasting, and combat is determined using six-sided dice and the innovative Nerve system.

But simplicity doesn’t mean that the game isn’t fun or challenging – flanking and rear attacks are devastating, cavalry charges are powerful and a barrage of gun fire will knock even the most hardened warrior from their feet. This is a game of tactics and strategy, played out in fast, furious and fun games.

Ardenne Offensive: German Forces in Lorraine and Ardennes, Sep 1944 - Feb 1945 (HC)
Ardenne Offensive: German Forces in Lorraine and Ardennes, Sep 1944 - Feb 1945 (HC)

The Ardennes Offensive provides Flames Of War players with the German forces needed to recreate the battles on the German frontier from September 1944 to February 1945.

You can field the forces battling the Americans in Lorraine as you hold back the American drive to the German border. Launch the great Ardennes Offensive to divide the British and Americans and strike into their rear. You can also fight the Nordwind winter offensive into Alsace-Lorraine.

You will be able to field troops from Germany’s new Panzer Brigades. These units had tremendous firepower thanks to some of Germany’s best equipment, such as the Panther medium tank and new StG44 assault rifles.

This book contains German Intelligence Briefings and Warriors from the following Divisions and Kampfgruppen:

* 106. Panzerbrigade Feldherrnhalle
* 111. Panzerbrigade Panzerkompanie
* 111. Panzerbrigade Panzergrenadierkompanie
* SS-Kampfgruppe Peiper
* SS-Kampfgruppe Hansen
* SS-Schnellgruppe Knittel
* 150. Panzerbrigade Kampfgruppe
* 116. Panzerdivision
* F?hrerbegleit and F?hrergrenadier brigades
* Volksgrenadier Divisions
* 5. Fallschirmj?gerdivision
* Nordwind Panzergrenadierkompanie
* Schwere Panzerj?gerkompanie
* Gebirgsj?gerkompanie

The Battle of the Bulge: Allied Forces on the German Border, Sep 1944 – Feb 1945 and The Ardennes Offensive: German Forces in Lorraine and the Ardennes, Sep 1944 – Feb 1945 are the two newest hardback compilations for Flames Of War.

They take the forces from Blood, Guts, and Glory, Devil’s Charge and Nuts, update them and compile them in two useful volumes. To this we have added new content, some of which is familiar from digital and PDF Briefings, while the rest is entirely new.

New Content in The Ardennes Offensive
The new German compilation, The Ardennes Offensive: German Forces in Lorraine and the Ardennes, Sep 1944–Feb 1945, is full of exciting new content. We have added a Gebirgsj?gerkompanie, which covers 2. Gebirgsdivision and 6. SS-Gebirgsdivision. As the Germans needed more men to fill the gaps in their lines, troops like the Gebirgsj?ger were deployed as normal infantry. Both these veteran divisions had seen hard fighting on the Finnish front and were moved to the German-French border as US forces threatened to break into Germany.

The popular Panzers to the Meuse PDF Intelligence Briefing has also been included. You can field a Panzerkompanie, a Gepanzerte Panzergrenadierkompanie, Gepanzerte Aufkl?rungsschwadron, and a Panzergrenadierkompanie. These have options to field them from 2. Panzerdivision, Panzer Lehr Division, 9. Panzerdivision, or 116. Panzerdivision.

These divisions represent the armoured power of the German Heer (Army) concentrated in the west for the Ardennes Offensive. Topped up with the latest equipment if available, none of these divisions would be as powerful again for the rest of the war. Panzer IV, Panther, StuG, Panzer IV/70, and Jagdpanthers all fought to make the Ardennes Offensive a success. These formations are all well supported with infantry, artillery, armoured cars, anti-tank, anti-aircraft, and engineer platoons.

The other armoured formations committed by the Heer were the F?hrer Brigades: the F?hrerbegleitbrigade and F?hrergrenadierbrigade. From these you can field a F?hrer Panzerkompanie, F?hrer Panzerf?silierkompanie, F?hrer Panzergrenadierkompanie or F?hrer Grenadierkompanie. These troops come in a variety of ratings, from Confident Veteran to Reluctant Trained, reflecting the hasty nature of their formation. However, they have some excellent equipment and troops.

We have added a Fallschirmj?gerkompanie to represent 5. Fallschirmj?gerdivision.
Unlike 3. Fallschirmj?gerdivision who operated with SS-Kampfgruppe Peiper, 5. Fallschirmj?gerdivision fought on the southern flank of the 'Bulge'. The 5. Fallschirmj?gerdivision was mostly made up of recently transferred Luftwaffe ground crew, though many of their Officers and NCOs were hardened Fallschirmj?ger.

They are rated Confident Trained and have access to a good selection of support, including the support of the Fallschirmj?ger’s own 11. Fallschirm-Sturmgesch?tz-Brigade.

To expand on SS-Kampfgruppe Peiper, we have added two additional 1. SS-Panzerdivision Kampfgruppen: KG Hansen and KG Knittel. SS-Kampfgruppe Hansen covers the group formed around the motorised SS-Panzergrenadiers of the division with the division’s Panzer IV/70 tank-hunters attached as their armour.

They can also be supported by the K?nigstiger heavy tank, as they absorbed a number of these as they followed behind SS-Kampfgruppe Peiper.

This force can also be used to field the other motorised panzergrenadier group SS-Kampfgruppe Sandig.

You can also field SS-Schnellgruppe Knittel. This group was form around SS-Panzeraufkl?rungs-Abteilung 1 and was equipped with Sd Kfz 250/9 and Sd Kfz 234/2 Puma armoured cars. This group initially took a more southerly route, but was eventually forced on to the same roads as Peiper, who they eventually fought alongside.

Changes to Existing German Forces
We’ve take the opportunity to review the Panzer Brigade briefings that first appeared in Blood, Guts, and Glory.

106. Panzerbrigade had a relatively long career for the panzer brigades, and we though it worth representing it with improved ratings as its troops became more experienced.

To reflect this we have added an option to take a 106. Panzerbrigade FHH Panzerkompanie as Confident Veteran (in addition to the original option of Reluctant Trained). We done the same with the brigade’s other fighting companies (FHH Panzersturmkompanie and FHH Panzergrenadierkompanie).

111. Panzerbrigade has also gained another option. Although 111. Panzerbrigade didn’t last as long as 106. Panzerbrigade as a separate entity, they did gain some confidence after their initial engagements. So, as well as their original Reluctant Trained rating, we have also given them a new Confident Trained option.

We have also updated the painting guides for the Colours Of War painting system. Inside both books you will also find terrain guides and optional weather rules.

To this we have added new content, some of which is familiar from digital and PDF Briefings, while the rest in entirely new.

New Content in The Battle of the Bulge
In the Allied compilation, The Battle of the Bulge, we have added a US 29th Infantry Division Rifle Company submitted by Jonathan Baber, to cover the action of this famous division after Normandy, as they push up to the German border at the end of 1944.

The force covers their amphibious operations as they crossed the Roer River on their way to the Rhine. These troops can be carried in LVT-4 Amtrac APCs and can be supported by specialist troops such as Sherman Crab flail tanks and Sherman Crocodile flame-thrower tanks.

Another new unit is the US 2nd Ranger Battalion created by Alexander Constantino. You finally have the opportunity to field Fearless Veteran Rangers as they fought for Castle Hill during the battles for the Hürtgen Forest. As well as the elite Rangers, you can take a variety of support platoons from nearby infantry division, including tanks, artillery, infantry, anti-aircraft and air.

Michael McSwiney has created a pair of briefings to cover the US 761st Tank Battalion ‘Black Panthers’. The Black Panthers were the US Army’s first African-American Tank Battalion. They fought through France and Germany from November 1944. They supported a variety of infantry division, being attached as required by operational priority.

They come in two rating options for early and later actions (Fearless Trained or Fearless Veteran) and have options to field a variety of Sherman tanks in a Tank Company, or Stuart light tanks in a Light Tank Squadron. Their support reflects the variety of different divisions they fought alongside during their campaigns.

We have also added a British section to The Battle Of the Bulge. It covers the XXX Corps as they were redirected to halt the German thrust towards the Meuse River.

You can field an Armoured Squadron from the 11th Armoured Division’s 29th Armoured Brigade as they fight in their old Sherman V and Firefly VC tanks. They are accompanied into the Ardennes by their own Motor Battalion and you can field a Motor Company.

The corps also committed the 51st Highland Division, 53rd Welsh Division, and 6th Airborne Division to the fight. These divisions all fought a number of tough engagements against determined German panzer troops, in a holding action which eventually turned into a counterattack.

We have also included a section on the British 7th Armoured Division, covering their breakout from Normandy and advance through France, Belgium and the Netherlands and into Germany. You can field a Desert Rats Armoured Squadron armed with Cromwell IV cruiser tanks, Firefly 17pdr tanks, and Challenger 17pdr tanks. Even Chaffee light tanks have begun to make an appearance in the 7th Armoured Division as replacements for Stuarts. Support includes armoured divisional support such as armoured artillery, self-propelled anti-tank and even Commandos. You can also command a Desert Rats Motor Battalion, or a Desert Rats Rifle Company form the division’s infantry brigade.

Changes to Exisiting US Forces

Towed Tank Destroyers
Due to the nature of the fighting in the Ardennes, and to better reflect how they were deployed in blocking positions, we changed the Towed Tank Destroyer Platoon to be like other anti-tank gun platoons, with guns, transport and command.

This removed the US Tank Destroyer rules from them, but makes them cheaper in points. However, because they are Immobile guns, as an exception we allow them to Ambush within 16”/40cm (as they are not artillery).

Lieutenant General George S. Patton Jr
Based on a lot of player feedback that Patton is considered over-powered, we decided to have a review of his rules. We made changes to change Foul Mouth to give 2+ Motivation for a platoon Patton joins (rather than 3+ for platoons within line of sight), and remove the Spearhead for platoons within line of sight. However, we have reduced his points to 75 points (from 100 points).

We also removed the Why We Fight special rule from the companies originally from Devil’s Charge. This rule was very circumstantial – it only came into effect when facing SS troops, so was only used occasionally.

Support Platoons
We have also clarified that your support platoons are the same symbol and related rating as your Company HQ when it is appropriate. There are of course still occasions when different rated troops fought together, and we have keep these where they seem flavourful. An example of where you may notice a difference is the US Rifle Company where Combat Platoons and Support Platoons should have the same symbol. This doesn’t affect platoons where your chosen divisional symbol isn’t given as an option; in this case you take whatever you want.

We have also updated the painting guides for the Colours Of War painting system. Inside both books you will also find terrain guides and optional weather rules.

Brave Romania: Romanian Forces in Mid War
Brave Romania: Romanian Forces in Mid War

In 1941 the Romanians joined the war against the Soviet Union as the Germans launched Operation Barbarossa on 22 June. Their primary goal was to regain the lost north-eastern province of Bessarabia. They had soon committed two whole armies to the enterprise. They captured Odessa in October 1941, engaged in heavy fighting as they advanced on Dnepr River and fought for control of the Crimea. Eventually Romania's two armies were committed to the defending the flanks of the Germans fighting for Stalingrad where they were hit by the Soviet counter-offensive in November 1942.

Background on the 3rd and 4th Romanian Armies on the Eastern front 1942 to 1943.

One of the key differences of the Romanians from other forces is the Peasant Army special rule. Before the game you roll a special Peasant Army dice, if you roll a Cross (or a 5 or 6 on a normal dice) you Unit will get the improved Motivation and Skill ratings list on right of the normal rating for the game. Those of you familiar with the Italians will recognise it as similar to the 8 Million Bayonets rule..

Instructions on how to build:

* A T-3 Medium Tank Company armed with German supplied T-3 (7.5cm) Panzer III tanks. The formation can also contain R-2 (Panzer 35(t)) light tanks.
* A T-4 Medium Tank Company with more German supplied T-4 (long 7.5cm) Panzer IV tanks. This formation can also have a similar mix of R-2 light tanks as the T-3 Medium Tank Company.
* A R-2 Light Tank Company. The R-2 light tank made up the bulk of Romanian’s armoured forces in 1942 and 1943. This formation can also have a unit of either T-3 or T-4 medium tanks.
* A Motorised Rifle Company representing the infantry of the Romanian armoured division. These troops were mostly mounted in trucks, dismounting to fight on foot. However, in December 1942 they were supplied with enough German Sd Kfz 251 half-tracks to field two Armoured Rifle Platoons. The company can also field machine-gun, mortar and anti-tank units. * A Rifle Company. The rifleman is the main frontline fighting soldier of the Romanian army. These tough, mainly rural folk, often make excellent fighters under the right leadership. Like the motorised riflemen, they can also call on machine-guns, mortars, anti-tank and infantry guns to provide them with further firepower.
* A Mountain Rifle Company represent the elite arm of the Romanian foot soldiers. These soldiers are trained to fight in the Carpathian Mountains that run through the west of their country. They are similarly equipment, but better trained than their riflemen brothers.
* A Cavalry Squadron represents another of the elite formation of the Romanian armed forces. The Romanians had one of the largest cavalry forces on the eastern front and field six divisions in 1942. You can field a Cavalry Squadron with up to three Cavalry Troops with machine-gun, mortar and anti-tank weapons units.
* These formations can be supported by a wide selection of supporting units including 75mm anti-tank, Pioneers, AB (Sd Kfz 221 & 222) armoured cars, T-38 light tanks, 120mm mortars, artillery, anti-aircraft and air support.

Fortress Europe: The Intelligence Handbook for January - August 1944 (SC)
Fortress Europe: The Intelligence Handbook for January - August 1944 (SC)

This is far more than an update and represents the core late-war lists for every nation in the new format. Over two years has passed since late-war began and we have evolved how lists are presented and what goes in them. The break between the western and eastern fronts seemed an ideal time to do this and gave us a chance to not only back date the new gear that came into use on the western front but bring the Soviet force organisations into line with the series of books we have planned for them.

It is time to update Festung Europa and bring it in line with the last two years of progression that intelligence handbooks have gone through. Enter: Fortress Europe!

Fortress Europe contains the core forces that were in Festung Europa, but they have been given the modern equivalent of a makeover to bring them to that same standard as our current books.

The first major change is the organisation diagrams for choosing your company have been changed to the new style.

The second major change is that we have added in the new units that have appeared in all the handbooks from the last two years in their relative places. Now all the forces can use the new equipment, not just the divisions covered in the handbooks.

The last major difference is that we have updated the Soviet section to bring it in line with the Eastern front books as you can see in Stalin’s Onslaught.

Fortress Europe is a 160 page full colour book and will be the same price as Festung Europa. This makes it 12 pages larger than its predecessor. Due the extra space requirements from the new organisational charts, some of the lists from Festung Europa will be covered more completely in one of our future Divisional Handbooks, such as the Soviet Rota Razvedki which will be in our next Eastern Front book, Hammer and Sickle. If you keep an eye on our website you will also see some updated briefings from Festung Europa appearing over the next few months as well.

Don’t worry if your favourite list is not in the new book. Fortress Europe does not replace Festung Europa but rather updates the lists within it. The forces in Festung Europa can still be fielded as valid Flames Of War forces so you are not forced to change anything should you not want to. It is simply a matter of making clear which book your force is from as it is either one or the other.
