The Fuchs (Fox) Transport-panzer (abbreviated to TPz) is a 6-wheeled, fully amphibious, armoured personnel carrier designed for a variety roles including troop transport, engineer transport, bomb disposal, NBC (Nuclear, Biological and Chemical) reconnaissance and electronic warfare.

It can carry up to eight passengers and has an MG3 machine-gun on an anti-aircraft mount. It can also mount a Milan anti-tank missile launcher if mobile firepower is needed.

The FV432 armoured personnel carrier is the British equivalent of the ubiquitous American M113.The design is very conventional, being made of welded steel plates and capable of carrying a section of ten infantry.

Like the West Germans, the French also mounted their HOT anti-tank guided missiles on Helicopters. Taking advantage of terrain they would move into position before launching missiles to destroy Soviet armour while their 20mm counterparts would supress enemy anti-air assets.

The Flugabwehrkanonenpanzer Gepard (Antiaircraft Cannon Tank, Cheetah), or Flakpanzer Gepard for short, is the main anti-aircraft vehicle of the panzer divisions. It is fitted with a sophisticated anti-aircraft radar system for locating and tracking its targets.

The Gepard is based on the hull of the Leopard 1 tank, with a large turret mounting a pair of 35mm Oerlikon autocannon and its tracking and search radar dishes. With a rate-of-fire of 550 rounds per minute for each gun, the Gepard does nasty things to Soviet aircraft.

The US divisions organised under the light division structure, such as the 82nd Airborne, had one reconnaissance squadron with one light cavalry troop mounted in wheeled vehicles. These had initially been jeeps, but by 1985 had been replaced by the new High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), ‘Humvee’ or ‘Hummer’ as it quickly became known to the troops.

Each troop had three variants of the HMMWV armaments carrier available, 14 with .50 cal machine-guns or 40mm Mk 19 grenade launchers, and eight mounting Improved TOW anti-tank missiles. A light cavalry troop is organised into six scout sections of four HMMWV vehicles, one armed with a M2 .50 cal machine-gun, one with a 40mm Mk19 grenade launcher and one or two with ITOW launchers. The excellent mobility of the HMMWV vehicle proved them ideal scouts.

A Section de Chasseurs (mounted in AMX-10P APCs) is organised into three combat groups, each with seven men. Each group is further divided into a 300m team and a 600m team. The 300m team is armed with FAMAS assault rifles and anti-tank rifle grenades, while the 600m team are additionally armed with a 7.62mm NF1 machine-gun. The unit is also armed with a pair of short range anti-tank weapons, usually the 89mm LRAC (Lance-Roquettes AntiChar de 89 mm modèle F1) reusable rocket launcher, but some units are issued with the new disposable APILAS (Armor-Piercing Infantry Light Arm System) portable one-shot 112mm recoilless antitank weapon.

A Section d’Infanterie (mounted in VAB APCs) is made up of a headquarters group, four combat groups and an anti-tank group. The combat groups are armed with the 5.56mm FAMAS (Fusil d’Assaut de la Manufacture d’Armes de Saint-Étienne) assault rifle and 7.62mm NF-1 general purpose machine-gun. The FAMAS is also designed to fire a number of different rifle grenades including the AC-58 anti-tank grenade for short range defence against armoured vehicles. The antitank group is armed with two 89mm LRAC F1 (Lance-Roquettes AntiChar de 89 mm modèle F1) anti-tank rocket launchers. Sometimes the LRAC’s firepower is also supplemented with the new APILAS disposable 112mm recoilless anti-tank weapon.

A horrendous clang shook the entire Merkava 2 of Lieutenant Adam Koren. Koren’s ears rang and all other sounds were muffled. He searched ahead for the enemy tank that had just hit them, locating it about 2000 metres to the northwest. He slapped his gunner Avi’s shoulder to get his attention.“Target, 2000 metres, Sabot,” he shouted.

Avi replied, but Koren couldn’t hear him. However, Avi acknowledged the order with a thumbs up before taking aim and sending a round towards the Syrian T-72M in the distance. Koren watched the T-72M as the round hit. For a few moments nothing happened, then a crewman scrambled from the turret just seconds before a funnel of flame erupted from the hatches.

Koren immediately began searching for another target. His loader, a new boy from Tel Aviv called Ezra, had already shoved another Sabot round into the breach of the gun, with Avi ready for the next target.

The Jaguar 1 and Jaguar 2 were German Raketenjagdpanzer (rocket tank-hunter) tank destroyers armed with anti-tank guided missiles.

The Jaguar 1 can support your Panzer Kompanie. It carried the HOT missile system, with an automated firing system allowing the crew to fire it from inside the vehicle under NBC (nuclear, biological and chemical) protection.

The Jaguar 2, which can support your Panzergrenadier Kompanie, mounted the older US-made Improved TOW missile system.

The Jaguar 1 equipped the Panzerjäger Kompanien (tank-hunter Companies) of the Panzer Brigades, where their role was to provide long-range anti-tank support to the Panzertruppen (armoured troops).

The Jaguar 1 is a development of the Kanonenjagdpanzer (Cannon Tank-hunter), a 90mm gun-armed tank-hunter introduced in the 1960s. The first anti-tank missile-armed version was the Raketenjagdpanzer 1 (rocket tank-hunter) armed with the SS-11 anti-tank missile. 316 of these vehicles were uparmoured and converted to mount the new HOT antitank missile system between 1978 and 1983 as the Jaguar 1.

HOT (Haut subsonique Optiquement Téléguidé Tiré d’un Tube, or High-subsonic Optical remote-guided, Tube-launched) is a long-range anti-tank missile system. The HOT missile system, as fitted the Jaguar 1, was designed to be used under NBC (nuclear, biological and chemical) protection, and the missile could be retracted into the vehicle for reloading using an automated loading system.

As they had used M106 recoilless rifles mounted on jeeps in earlier wars, by 1985 the IDF had jeeps mounting Improved TOW missile launchers. This light and nimble vehicle could move about rough terrain and be in position to deliver a well-placed anti-tank missile with relative ease.

The LARS (Leichte Artillerie-raketen-system, light artillery rocket system) is a self-propelled multiple rocket launcher used by the division’s Raketenartillerie Bataillon (rocket artillery battalion). The LARS mounts two launcher pods with 18 tubes each. A single LARS launcher is able to fire 36 spin-stabilized 110mm rockets in 18 seconds.

The Light Armoured Vehicle, or LAV, is one of the newest vehicles in the Marine Corps’ arsenal. Based on the Swiss MOWAG Piranha and built by General Motors in Canada, this vehicle offers the Marines a fast, highly mobile reconnaissance and light fire support vehicle.

Introduced in 1983, the Marine Corps have organised a number of light armoured vehicle battalions equipped with the LAV and assigned to the Marine divisions. Each battalion has four light armoured vehicle companies equipped with LAV-25, LAV-AT and LAV-M vehicles.

The standard LAV-25 found in the light armoured vehicle platoons mounts a turret armed with an M242 25mm chain gun that can fire anti-tank and high explosive rounds. A coaxial M240 machine-gun is mounted alongside the chain-gun, and a pintle-mounted M240 machine-gun is mounted on the turret roof.

The U.S. Marine Corps LAV-25 (Light Armored Vehicle) is a modular platform used for numerous roles the Marines fielded the LAV-AD in which the primary armament was replaced with a GAU-12 Equalizer 25mm 5-barreled Gatling cannon. In addition, it was equipped with four FIM-92 Stinger missiles each. This combination provided the Marines with capable defense against helicopters and ground attack aircraft.

Though lightly armoured, the Leopard 1 tank is fast and well armed, with a 105mm L7 gun that is more than capable of dealing with any scouting vehicles of Warsaw Pact.

Even though the powerful Leopard 2 main battle tank is now in service throughout the panzer brigades, the Leopard 1 tank has not been retired. One of its roles is now as part of the divisional Panzeraufklärungs battalions in the schwere Panzeraufklärungs Kompanien (heavy armoured reconnaissance companies) and gemischte Panzeraufklärungs Kompanie (mixed armoured reconnaissance company).

The Aufklärungs troops at the very front of the division’s vanguard are the Späh Truppen (reconnaissance patrols) equipped with the 8-wheeled Luchs armoured car.

The Luchs is fast on road, but still has excellent cross-country performance. It is a very quiet vehicle allowing its crew to advance on enemy positions undetected. If they are spotted, the Luchs can reverse at full-speed with the driver switching to a rear facing driving position. It is amphibious and is armed with a rapid-fire 20mm auto-cannon.
