Mazes: Fantasy Roleplaying (HC)
Mazes: Fantasy Roleplaying (HC)

Introduction to Mazes video and PDF.

MAZES - Fantasy Roleplaying REFORGED.

A modern take on the classic fantasy dungeon RPG. With a single polyhedral die and the power of your imagination can you defeat the Maze Controller with swords, sorcery and shadow?

Lightning fast and easy to master, Mazes returns us to the dungeons where we first battled dragons with an award-winning, unique approach to fantasy roleplaying.

Open the door to adventure - if you're brave enough.

Will you dare dangerous and deadly delving in dark dungeons?

MAZES is a return to the classic sword and sorcery dungeon crawler with award-winning, yet delightfully simple modern rules that put you right into the action. A thoroughly modern take on the original RPG of dragons, dice, and dungeons!

Mazes is a fresh take on the classic dungeon RPG. Choose a die, pick a class, and open the door to adventure. Mazes is elegant, simple, and fast, with rules designed to create fun, dangerous adventures. Characters are well defined, with edges that make them feel and play differently. The MC (the Maze Controller) has tools that make it easy to set up and run games without a lot of prep. Plus, there are plenty of published adventures for Mazes, and rules that make it easy to use any OSR compatible modules.

Mazes captures the original feel of fantasy roleplaying; and translates it into a vibrant, easy to understand, modern rules system. In Mazes, you pick a die, pick a class, answer a few questions – and you’re ready to play. Like an old school game, Mazes is focused on creativity and “rulings over rules”. As a modern game, the rules are consistent, extendable, and focused on the narrative. Together, this means that the rules are fast to learn, logical, and adjudicable without having to consult a rule book every five minutes.

Easy to learn, and easy to teach - Mazes is the perfect introduction to roleplaying, while still having enough teeth for even the gnarliest grognards. It's time to get back in the dungeon!

At its core, Mazes works like this. You select a polyhedral die – a d4, d6, d8, or d10 – this die represents your character. Whenever you need to roll dice – you only ever ROLL this DIE. This die determines your “ROLE” within the group. The d4 is there to think and talk, resolve social and mental puzzles, and provide powerful spells and effects. The d6 is all about fast movement and physical reactions, providing action, agility, and speed. The d8 dishes out the damage, and the d10 is the shield and tank.

Like most RPGs, on your turn you explain what you want to do. The Maze Controller (the player running the game) may ask you to roll against one of the “outcomes” in the game: BOOKS are your smarts, BOOTS your movement, BLADES your damage potential, and BONES your strength and endurance. So, if you are rolling to smash a troll in the face with your hammer, that’s a BLADES roll; but if instead you wanted to run away, that would be BOOTS. When you are trying to do something you want to roll one of the numbers listed – so for a BLADES roll, it’s a success if you roll a 4, a 5, a 6, or a 7.

There are two other outcomes as well – a KEY (when you roll a 1) or a CROWN (when you roll the top of the die, a 4, 6, 8, or 10 depending on your chosen role). The Key is like a “critical” – it’s always a success if you are doing something that your character can do – and the CROWN is a success or a failure based on the current DARKNESS – an abstracted level of danger based on the actions of the party. Taking actions that are dangerous, loud, and aggressive (like say, splitting the party) add Darkness; as does encountering monsters and hazards. When the DARKNESS is low, CROWNS are successes, but when the DARKNESS is HIGH, they are failures.

Mazes is powered by polymorph – which is a compact yet comprehensive rules framework for roleplaying. It’s designed to provide the full experience of a crunchy RPG, but with minimal setup and prep – all without giving up the fun, mechanical depth of an exciting roleplaying system. Sorry, there isn’t any math – we did all that work for you! In a polymorph game, each player only ever uses a specific polyhedral die – a d4, a d6, a d8, or a d10. Each die represents a different “way to play” or a different “role” that they have in the group. Whenever a player asks “can I do something”, they roll their die and with a quick glance at their character sheet to know if they succeed.

There is NEVER any math involved (no modifiers, no masters). Depending on the game world and what kind of character that you are playing – you may roll with advantage or disadvantage (or not need to roll at all); and the MC (the person running the game) never rolls dice. The MC has tools to control the flow of game, and resources like the players to ensure that game play is fast, fair, and fun - without needing to memorize a million rules.

Mazes started out as a set of zines for ZINEQUEST 1 in 2019. This was the first time the polymorph system had been shown to the world. Fans and RPG industry leaders saw the elegant simplicity of the rule set and nominated Mazes for an ENnie for Best Rules ENNIE and an IGDN Indie Groundbreaker Award for Best Rules. Mazes won the IGDN Indie Groundbreaker Award for Best Rules!

Rebel Scum Roleplaying Game
Rebel Scum Roleplaying Game

An Anticascist Space Opera

Rebel Scum is a cinematic roleplaying game that tries to tackle the problems of today, by pretending to punch Space Nazis right in the face.

An explicitly anti-fascist space opera RPG - a war in the stars between the forces of good and evil, a political allegory about right now told in the style of classic action figures.

Powered by polymorph, REBEL SCUM is as fast and easy to play as picking up some dudes and smashing them together making pew-pew-pew noises. Except now, you know what the fight is about.

REBEL SCUM tells the story of how scrappy, anti-fascist heroes can fight back against a government with unlimited power (including giant lasers and space magic). Inspired by a love for a certain line of 3 and 3/4 inch action figures, this is a fast paced, feel good, space opera of rebellion and adventure.

In this Roleplaying Game, characters are all expressed as action figures, with their pertinent stats and abilities "on the back of the card." Choose your toy and get out into battle!

REBEL SCUM rewards you with Stars when you punch Nazis in the face, and you can use those Stars to take cinematic action (like bullseye a ratwomp, swing across a chasm, cut off a creeper’s arm in a bar). And it's not to late to get in on the action!

There are five character aspects in REBEL SCUM: The Ronin, The Revolutionary, The Rogue, The Renegade, and The Robot. Each Aspect selects 3 classes that provide their skills and abilities, answer a leading question that puts them into the story, as well as selecting their role (which determines the die that they roll).

Powered by polymorph and compatible with 9th Level Games’ award-winning MAZES Fantasy Roleplaying, the Return to Dark Tower RPG brings dark, pulp-inspired storytelling and fast action to the table with modern roleplaying rules built on very deep roots.

Enter an epic fantasy world, take on perilous quests, raise an army of warriors and wizards, and defend your Kingdom from the malevolent forces of The Tower! If your heroes cannot defeat the Adversary in just one year, the nefarious plots and machinations of the evil mastermind will come to fruition.

Over the course of a series of procedurally generated adventures, your party will assemble soldiers and allies, and acquire powerful magic and lore, to attack the Dark Tower and defeat the Evil within. The game will be focused on a short campaign experience and will blend epic action with classic dungeon delving.

Return to Dark Tower RPG will be built on 9th Level Games’ polymorph roleplaying system and will be part of the Mazes Fantasy Roleplaying family. Return to Dark Tower will be a stand-alone game but its contents will be easily compatible with existing MAZES products.

The Return to Dark Tower RPG is designed to be played over a series of 3 to 5 game sessions collectively called a “campaign”. During each campaign, the players create an ADVERSARY together (or choose one of the existing great evils – like the Bane of Omens or the Ash Strider). One player will take on the role of the ADVERSARY and will act as the Maze Controller, or MC – the campaign's game master. They will run the game sessions, and plot against the players using the resources laid out in the game manual to crush their puny heroes! The other players will each create a HERO and a COMPANION from one of the Four Kingdoms. Together, they will quest to assemble allies, armies, and artifacts of great power to aid their cause. They will take on quests and delve in dungeons to either build up their own power, or remove their enemies' advantages.

TIME IS AGAINST YOU
If the heroes cannot defeat the Adversary in one year – the nefarious plots and machinations of the evil mastermind will come to fruition.

To emulate the race against the clock, actions within the campaign cost “weeks” of time. Traveling across the Four Kingdoms has a cost in time, as does going down into dungeons, taking on companion quests, cleansing regions of evil, and spoiling the machinations of the Adversary.

As the MC, you will have a set of fiendish plots. Each plot is a “resource clock” that fills up over time. If the heroes can’t diffuse the plot – through a quest, negotiation, defeating a monster, etc. – the clock fills and is readied for the FINAL BATTLE, giving you greater options, more powerful monsters, and darker abilities.

Over time, RPG sessions become “harder” and “deadlier” – both through the inclusion of harder foes and monsters, and from “darkness effects” which give the heroes disadvantages when it comes to specific actions in the game.

HEROES & COMPANIONS
You are a GREAT HERO of the FOUR KINGDOMS. You aren’t just some adventurer – you are a hero of legend leading your forces to save the world!

Each player creates a HERO and a COMPANION. Each has their own character sheet, and depending on the Quest and session you may play your Hero or your Companion.

* THE HERO – The Hero is the leader of a force of allies – soldiers, outlaws, thieves, wizards, or perhaps something stranger. These forces provide narrative options for character during RP and are your major resource for the final battle – utilizing polymorph’s exceptional ability to change scale and scope without altering core rules.
* THE COMPANION – A fully fleshed out RPG character that bolsters ANOTHER character’s HERO.
* THE FORCES – The foot soldiers, troops, animal companions, and the like that make up the army of the Heroes.

COMPANION and HERO characters are compatible with MAZES Fantasy Roleplaying and can be used in Mazes games – and your Mazes characters can be used as COMPANIONS in the Return to Dark Tower RPG.

CAMPAIGN PLAY
Each session features 3 distinct phases – Quest, Tally, and March.

* QUEST is the core, traditional RPG session – going down into a dungeon to battle a monster and loot treasure, a roleplaying session of politics or intrigue, etc. The QUEST’s aim is to either give the HEROES a resource for the FINAL BATTLE (negotiating with Bone Hills mercenaries to join your army, acquiring a magic staff from a tomb in the Lost Lands, etc.) or for foiling an ADVERSARY PLOT (stopping the emergence of the Soul Lich in the Irontops, saving the village from a plague in Three Rivers, etc.).
* TALLY is a phase dedicated to an inventory of your resources. It replaces the traditional fantasy treasure hording and shopping step. What do our forces look like? What are our advantages? Are we ready to attack the Tower, or do we need more support?
* Finally, we MARCH. The final wrap-up of each session where we decide what we are going to do in the next session – take on a new quest or proceed to the final battle? Decide which heroes and companions are going to play, and where they want to go. This will cost time (and possibly resources).

THE ADVERSARY
The ADVERSARY acting as the MC works with the party to determine what they want to do next, where they want to go, and how they want to spend their precious time. While certain HEROES and COMPANIONS are playing, others can be assigned to activities that spend time and produce resources or effects. The Adversary then advances their PLOTS based on the outcome of the game session and new time spent, and goes away to prepare for the next game session.

Deluxe gold-stamped hardcover includes 208 full color pages of content—everything you need to make characters and run games, plus details on how you can use components from Return to Dark Tower board game to enhance your roleplaying experience!
