Descent: Legends of the Dark
Descent: Legends of the Dark

The definitive cooperative dungeon-crawling board game for one to four players!

Terrinoth is in peril. The demon-tainted Uthuk Y’llan barbarians stalk the realm and the undead servants of Waiqar the Undying venture beyond their borders for the first time in memory. The leaders of Terrinoth are divided and fractious, unable to unite against these common threats. And in the northern barony of Forthyn, the stage is set for the next great confrontation between Terrinoth and the forces of darkness...

For years, your journeys have taken you across the fantasy realm of Terrinoth, venturing into dark forests, shadowy cities, ancient crypts, and misty swamps... but your true legend is about to begin.

Forge your own legend together with your friends as you adventure across the vibrant fantasy realm of Terrinoth! Powered by its fully integrated free companion app, Descent: Legends of the Dark puts you in the role of a budding hero with their own playstyle and abilities. Together with your unlikely companions, you’ll begin an unexpected adventure—an adventure told across the sixteen quests of the Blood and Flame campaign. Throughout your campaign, you’ll face undead lurking in the mists, demonic barbarians stalking the wilds, and even more terrifying threats.

With 46 pieces of 3D terrain and 40 stunning hero and monster miniatures to draw you into the game, your greatest adventure is yet before you!

Is this the third edition of Descent: Journeys in the Dark?
Descent: Legends of the Dark is not the third edition of Descent: Journeys in the Dark. Although it shares the realm of Terrinoth and the top-level identity as a dungeon-crawling board game indicated by the Descent title, we see Legends of the Dark as a new addition to our catalog, rather than a third edition of Journeys in the Dark.

Although Journeys in the Dark featured the Road to Legend companion app, that game was always designed as a competitive experience, pitting one to four hero players against a single overlord player. Legends of the Dark harnesses its integrated companion app to deliver a cooperative game from the very beginning, freeing you and your friends to fully focus on becoming the heroes of Terrinoth.

Core gameplay mechanics such as combat, fatigue, skills, items, and more have received completely new interpretations with Legends of the Dark, while a new approach to scenario layout and 3D terrain creates striking multi-level scenarios.

The app also brings new changes to gameplay, introducing enemies with adaptable strategies, complex status effects and triggers fully managed by the app, and the ability to develop your heroes based on the choices you make in scenarios. You’ll also uncover a wealth of activity between scenarios, such as crafting, shopping in the city, upgrading equipment, and more.

Because of these various differences, Descent: Legends of the Dark is not compatible with Descent: Journeys in the Dark content.

Heroes of the Realm
Descent: Legends of the Dark invites you to become one of six heroes, each eager to adventure across Terrinoth and brought to gorgeous life with stunning art and a beautifully crafted miniature. More than just their visual style, each hero boasts their own tactical approach to combat and their own virtues that you can choose to pursue during quests.

For example, you may play as Vaerix, the Dragon-Hybrid Outcast. A strong-willed survivor like Vaerix calls fellow heroes to follow a greater purpose, battling with the warbell or keeping their companions hale and ready for the next fight. The Human Avenger, Brynn, is eager to punish any insult, wading into the heat of battle and meting out justice with hammer and blade. Perhaps you prefer Galaden’s long-range attacks and balletic combat style, or you’ll call upon the forces of magic and your bond with your phoenix as Syrus. No matter which hero you’ve chosen for this quest, you’ll be able to explore their trademark combat style and tactics—and since you can choose your weapons, armor, consumables, and even your skills at the beginning of each quest, there’s almost limitless opportunities to remix your character and explore new styles as you play through the campaign!

Gameplay in Descent: Legends of the Dark is fast and intuitive. You’ll take three actions on every turn—one maneuver action and two additional actions of your choice! Maneuvering gives you movement points, as shown in the upper right corner of the character sheet, and since you always have a maneuver action, you’ll always be able to reposition and put yourself in a more advantageous position for attack. Other than maneuvering, you can use an action to attack an enemy, rolling your attack dice and drawing upon your hero’s abilities and weapons to deal maximum damage or inflict harmful conditions on your foes. Or, you may use the explore action to interact with a piece of 3D terrain or a token by using the app. You can also use your action to perform one of the most crucial actions in Legends of the Dark: the ready action.

The ready action lets you flip your hero sheet or one of your cards to its opposite side, unlocking new abilities! For example, Galaden can use his Light Step ability, suffering fatigue to shift his position and quickly move across the battlefield—or if he flips to the opposite side of his hero sheet, he can suffer three fatigue to expose an enemy in line of sight, cuing the app to inflict 20% more damage on that enemy during attacks!

You’ll notice the fatigue limit in the lower right corner of each hero sheet, as well as other cards, such as weapons or skills. When you take fatigue to trigger Galaden’s Light Step ability, you’ll place that fatigue on his hero sheet. What’s more, attacks from enemies or environmental effects may cause your hero to suffer condition tokens, such as infected or terrified, which are also placed on your hero sheet. When you ready a card or hero sheet and flip it to its opposite side, you’ll also remove all fatigue and condition tokens from it—making this an ideal way to keep your heroes ready for action, as well as pulling out the right abilities for each situation.

Your hero sheet isn’t the only thing you can ready, every hero also has an attack card and skill cards! Each hero starts the game with two weapon cards, sleeved together back-to-back to create a single attack card. (Sleeves to create the attack cards are included in the game!) For instance, Vaerix creates their attack card by sleeving their two starting weapon cards, the Ironthorn Warbell and the Riverwatch Spear. When a hero attacks, the attack die is determined by their hero sheet, but damage and other special abilities, such as the type of damage being inflicted, are determined by the weapon you attack with! And as you can see, your attack card can also take fatigue—which is cleared by readying the card. Over the course of the game, you’ll have the chance to discover and craft new weapons, and at the beginning of every quest, you can build your hero’s attack card by drawing on the unlocked weapons from your hero’s two weapon archetypes.

Skill cards can also be readied, switching between two complementary abilities, such as Vaerix’s Destiny's Call and Fate's Embrace —two complementary abilities on opposite sides of the same skill card. It should be plain to see that readying forms a huge part of the strategy and tactics of every encounter. There’s even a positive condition token—Prepared—that can be placed on one of your cards, allowing you to ready that card without spending an action!

Strike Back Against Darkness
Evil is stirring in Terrinoth once more, and countless dangers arise throughout the game’s sprawling sixteen-quest campaign. As we’ve mentioned before, the gameplay foundation of Descent: Legends of the Dark is built on a fully integrated companion app, which governs everything from activating enemies, to building an unfolding scenario, to opening the door for activities like crafting and shopping between quests.

At the beginning of a quest, you’ll start with perhaps only a single map tile in play—but as you move deeper into the map and explore your surroundings the Legends of the Dark app will direct you to place more and more tiles and terrain. The combination of double-sided map tiles and underlays gives unparalleled depth to the number of scenarios you can create, and that depth is elevated with the addition of vertical levels and 3D terrain that give Legends of the Dark an unrivaled presence on your tabletop.

Your levels will be filled with staircases up to other rooms, sturdy bookshelves, towering trees, treasure chests, barricades, doors, and statues. And all this 3D terrain isn’t just decorative: you can interact with all of it through the app, plucking valuable tomes off a moldering shelf, cracking open a booby-trapped chest, or climbing a tree to scout out the terrain ahead.

Your objectives will change from quest to quest as you follow the overarching story of the campaign, but you’ll face constant opposition from enemies. From bandits waylaying you on the road, to Uthuk Y’llan berserkers howling for blood, to deadly fae, monstrous golems, ravenous wolves, undead wights, and even more terrifying foes, every enemy is fully brought to life with stunning miniatures.

Thanks to the Legends of the Dark companion app, each of these enemies boast their own cunning ploys and adapt to the unfolding battle, whether that means laying their plans for a devastating future attack, inspiring other enemies in combat, or even more devious tactics. We’ll take a much closer look at combat in a future preview, since the strategic interplay between your hero abilities, weapons, and skills is a key part of every quest in Legends of the Dark!

Crafting Your Weapon
The Legends of the Dark app isn’t limited to your quests, in fact, it opens the door for even more opportunities between scenarios, such as crafting and weapon upgrades. Over the course of the adventure, as you slay enemies, open chests, or explore dusty chambers, you’ll uncover valuable crafting materials and gold, all tracked by the app. Once you’ve found the recipe for an item, you can craft and upgrade that item at the crafthall in your home city of Frostgate. Perhaps you’ll create new Seer’s Blades for Galaden, or a Gilded Warbell for Vaerix! No matter what you craft, all weapons can be upgraded, so long as you have the resources to pay for it, unlocking an even more powerful version of the weapon.

Weapons can be modified even further in the Frostgate armory. In Descent: Legends of the Dark, weapons have three parts. The first part dictates the weapon card that you use, but the other two parts grant your weapon secondary abilities with a percent chance of triggering each time your hero attacks. These bonuses are fully managed by the app, and in the armory, you can optimize for your next quest, or customize your weapons to fit your style of play.

As your hero grows and gains experience over the course of the campaign, you’ll have even more chances to customize your hero. Every hero has unique feats, tracked by the app, that you can complete to progress your hero’s personal growth. Completing feats can grant you powerful rewards, like new skills or exclusive recipes, so you’ll want to be sure you keep your feats in mind as you play. Your hero also earns experience points over the course of the quest that can be used to unlock skills. Your skills aren’t fixed however—at the start of any new quest, you can choose which skills you want to take, reallocating your experience throughout the campaign as you explore new playstyles and learn more about how you most want to play.

Your Legend Begins
The story told across the Blood and Flame campaign is an epic story that rises to its own finale but at the same time, it’s only the first act of your story. You can look for Act II and Act III to be coming in the future as their own expansions, each box packed full of new content and the next full-length Legends of the Dark campaign. We don’t have anything more to say about these upcoming act expansions right now, but stay tuned in the months following the release of Descent: Legends of the Dark!

Terrinoth needs heroes and there’s no better time to start forging your own legend. Get ready to start playing the definitive dungeon-crawling board game with the release of Descent: Legends of the Dark

Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-Earth
Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-Earth

Katso pelin traileri valmistajan Youtube -sivuilta.

A fully cooperative, app-supported board game for one to five players, inviting you to become the greatest heroes of Middle-earth!

Shadows creep through the lands of Middle-earth, as whispers of new evils in Mirkwood and Mordor spread among the Free Peoples of Elves, Dwarves, and Men. As the shadow rises with festering evil and corruption, new heroes are needed to protect Middle-earth.

The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-earth lets you embark on your own adventures in J.R.R. Tolkien’s iconic world, embodying heroes of the Free Peoples and fighting back against the oppressive might of Sauron. You’ll battle villainous foes, make courageous choices, and strike a blow against the evil that threatens the land—all as part of a thrilling campaign that leads you across the storied hills and dales of Middle-earth.

Each individual game of Journeys in Middle-earth is a single adventure in a larger campaign. You’ll explore the vast and dynamic landscapes of Middle-earth, using your skills to survive the challenges you encounter on these perilous quests. As you and your fellow heroes explore the wilderness and battle the dark forces arrayed against you, the game’s free companion app guides you to reveal the looming forests, quiet clearings, and ancient halls of Middle-earth, while also controlling the enemies you encounter. Whether you’re venturing into the wild on your own or with close companions by your side, you can write your own legend in the history of Middle-earth.

A Hero of Middle-earth
Central to your unfolding tale are the heroes that you and your friends choose to form your Fellowship in Journeys in Middle-earth. Each of the six heroes included in the Core Set is utterly unique, lending their own mix of might, wisdom, agility, spirit, and wit to the trials that present themselves with every adventure.

A Dwarf like Gimli, for example, burns for battle, and his prodigious might and spirit serve him well in confrontations with Orcs or other enemies that cross his path. As a small Hobbit, on the other hand, Bilbo Baggins primarily shies away from fights. With a clever mind like his, though, he has little need for protection from other characters. Instead, he can cling to the shadows as a self-sufficient burglar who won’t easily succumb to fear. There are six heroes to choose from in Journeys in Middle-earth, and we'll look at each of them in future previews!

Each hero’s skills and special abilities form a foundation for you to build on, but a hero is far more than a collection of stats. As you interact with the creatures and locations of Middle-earth, your hero will rely on their own unique deck of skill cards to overcome the challenges they face. Rather than leaving a player’s fate up to a roll of the dice, the heroes must turn to their skill deck while exploring, encountering threats, attacking enemies, and interacting with the people of Middle-earth. To perform a skill test, a player simply reveals cards from the top of their skill deck equal to the value of their tested skill, hoping to reveal enough success icons to pass the test.

Revealing these skill cards determines if you succeed at your tests, but that’s far from their only purpose. Your skill deck also captures the essence of each hero. In addition to the icons in the upper left corner, each skill card also offers valuable abilities that can be used when you take the time to prepare those skills—removing them from the skill deck and placing them below your hero card. Preparing your skills lets you access powerful abilities, but it also means those cards are no longer in your skill deck, and no longer helping you succeed at skill tests. You’ll need to carefully choose which skills to prepare, balancing their effects against your need to pass your skill tests!

Every hero boasts their own mixture of stats and special abilities, but the composition of each hero's skill deck is also different. All heroes have access to certain basic skill cards, like Unyielding Spirit, but every character also has their own set of personal skill cards—and as your adventures progress, your hero has the opportunity to grow and evolve, gaining more and more powerful skills!

In addition to the hero’s personal skill cards, your hero’s skill deck is also determined by choosing one of six roles! These roles invite you to play to different strengths within your Fellowship—in one adventure, you may lead your friends down unseen paths as your group’s Pathfinder, while in the next you could become a Hunter, attacking the enemies that stand in your way. You could take on a new role in each new adventure or choose to deepen your skill in your current role, ultimately giving you the freedom to experiment with dozens of combinations of characters and roles over the course of a campaign. No matter what, you have the final say over how your hero approaches their quests in Middle-earth.

Tales Untold
Once you’ve selected your hero and your role, your journey is about to begin. The wild heights, mist-capped mountains, rolling plains, and darkling forests of Middle-earth await, and there’s no telling what you could find around the next bend in the road.

In the first scenario of your campaign, you’re introduced to the journey map of Journeys in Middle-earth—a series of lavishly illustrated, double-sided tiles that are added to the board as you continue to explore. This are the primary building block for many of your adventures, and the possibilities for what you can encounter are nearly limitless. You may find yourself trekking through a primeval forest, investigating ancient ruins, or delving into a gloomy cave or Dwarven hall. As you move from place to place, you’ll be able to further investigate your surroundings and explore by interacting with search, threat, and person tokens in the app.

For many scenarios, you’ll remain solely on the journey map, but for more tactical situations like a micro-scale, combat-oriented adventure, you’ll move from the journey map to the battle map—a smaller board that you can fill with terrain, creating an Orcish encampment, a ruined building, or even more unusual locations. Whether your journey takes place among the rocky hills of Eriador, deep in a musty cave, or in an old fort overrun by Orcs, your campaign can take you between far-flung adventures on the journey map or fast-paced, frenetic action on the battle map!

No matter which map you find yourself on, the enemies that you face in Journeys in Middle-earth are each controlled by the game’s companion app, freeing you and your fellow heroes to focus entirely on working together to defeat the forces of evil. The world of Middle-earth is not a safe place for heroes or adventurers. In your travels, you’ll be brought face-to-face with marauding Orcs, towering Trolls, and darker enemies, all brought to life with the game’s 25 stunning enemy miniatures. The companion app also gives each of these enemies their own unique behavior, so as they hunt and attack, you’ll need to adapt your strategies to counter the monsters that you face.

Bones of Arnor
Ancient kingdoms once spanned the realm of Arnor, kingdoms that now lay in ruin. The Free People who still inhabit these lands are scattered, simple, and few. Beyond their poorly patrolled borders, an unknown darkness gathers, and only a small band of ostracized Rangers has taken notice of the threat.

In recent months, a rash of thefts has swept through Eriador, from the White Towers of Emyn Beriad to the old ruins of Weathertop. Not two weeks past, many of the older treasures of the Shire’s Mathom House disappeared into the night. The significance of these thefts may seem small, but you can sense the shadows in their wake...

Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-Earth -Shadowed Paths Expansion
Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-Earth -Shadowed Paths Expansion

An expansion for The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-earth!

A new menace stirs in Mirkwood. Rumors of gigantic spiders infesting the forest have drawn you to visit the realm of the Woodland King, but who knows what you might find there, lurking around the next corner, shaded under thick, rustling boughs?

Calling you east of the Misty Mountains, this expansion unlocks an all-new campaign with thirteen scenarios that take you from the tangled paths of Mirkwood deep into the shadowed halls of abandoned Moria. At the same time, Shadowed Paths adds five heroes, 25 enemy miniatures and 20 journey map tiles as well as new terrain, items, and titles to all of your adventures in Middle-earth!

Will you heed the call? Gather your friends, prepare your heroes, and brave the terrors of Shadowed Paths!

Into the Woodland Realm
The evil growing in the shadows of Mirkwood can only be repelled by brave heroes willing to face down this darkness. As you prepare to venture forth into Middle-earth once more, then, Shadowed Paths provides five new heroes who can contribute their unique skills to your Fellowship.

Hailing from all corners of Middle-earth, these heroes have no lack of experience fighting the foul beasts who plague the land. Arwen Undómiel, for example, carries the legacy of her ancestors forward. Like her father before her, Arwen is a master of the healing arts and can flip fear and damage cards facedown or remove facedown fear and damage cards altogether.

But Arwen is more than just a healer. Adept at attacking both with blade and from afar, she can easily dispatch the beasts you encounter with Knife or Sling. Not content to simply fight off enemies, though, she is also Willful enough to keep fighting until all evil has been eliminated. Outside of combat, Arwen shares the Elven Light commonly seen amongst her people, but her great Nobility also sets her apart from other Elves and helps nearby heroes prepare for their own tests. No matter what dangers await her, Arwen will always be the Evenstar of the Elves, bringing light and wisdom to all.

In addition to her natural abilities, Arwen can also take on a specific role in your Fellowship, of course, and the Shadowed Paths expansion unlocks five new roles that any hero can choose when beginning an adventure. In Arwen’s case, her vast knowledge and skill in the healing arts make her a natural Herbalist. In this role, Arwen can use the natural Curiosity of Herbalists to find the inspiration she needs to overcome the challenges ahead. Once she’s indulged this curiosity, she can then dispense her Gathered Wisdom to prepare more skills or heal her wounds.

Dark Influence
Whether you choose the healing expertise of an Herbalist or use trinkets and items in new ways as a Smith, your quest remains clear: journey into the heart of Mirkwood and eliminate the evil that has taken root there. But more than one road can lead you to this goal. At the end of many Shadowed Paths adventures, the app will present you with a choice of which adventure to play next. Each fork in the road changes the course of your journey and, ultimately, the path your Fellowship takes is up to you.

These adventures will certainly bring you into contact with enemies of many different types, of course, and while these beasts are certain to take their toll, the true enemy may lie within. Despite beginning the campaign united in their efforts to rid Mirkwood of the rising menace that resides there, throughout Shadowed Paths heroes can slowly give into to the forces of greed, despair, and suspicion in the form of corruption.

Unlike damage or fear, corruption stays with the heroes throughout the entire campaign, and is tracked by the app. This corruption can weigh on a hero, triggering certain events during your adventures. What’s more, if a hero cannot pass a last stand test when they would gain their fourth corruption, they are defeated. Do you have what it takes to resist the corrupting influences you face long enough to complete your quest?

Travel New Roads
Rumors of dark creatures infesting Mirkwood have reached your ears. If they are true, you will have to seek out ways to fight the foul beasts. But what awaits in the gathering shadows of the forest? Build a new Fellowship and journey into the darkness with the Shadowed Paths expansion for Journeys in Middle-earth!

Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-Earth -Spreading War Expansion
Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-Earth -Spreading War Expansion

War has come to the realm of Men. Shadows spread throughout Rohan and Gondor, from the tangled depths of Fangorn Forest to the haunted ruins of Osgiliath. You have encountered ruthless mercenaries that have invaded the kingdoms of Men under orders from a mysterious figure, and now you must strike out to hopefully quell the tide of violence before it becomes too great.

Taking place in the proud kingdoms of Gondor and Rohan, this expansion unlocks an all-new campaign with fifteen scenarios that see you traveling between the kingdoms and defending them from enemy forces. Spreading War also comes with six new heroes, over 20 enemy miniatures, 18 double-sided journey map tiles, new roles, new terrain types, and much, much more!

The kingdoms of Men call for aid. Will you answer? Gather your Fellowship and rise to the challenge in Spreading War!

Stalwart Companions
With an onslaught of brutal mercenary attacks targeting both Gondor and Rohan, it will take a group of courageous heroes to withstand the assault and push them back. Fortunately, Spreading War provides six new heroes to help defend the kingdoms of Men, each bringing their own unique strengths and skills to your Fellowship.

First among these fine heroes is Beorn , the taciturn shapeshifter whom Bilbo and the Traveling Company encountered on their journey to Erebor. More at home in the woods than among people, Beorn excels at scouting and safely making his way through the wilderness of Middle-earth. The greatest—and most iconic—feature of this soft-spoken beekeeper is his ability to transform into a hulking beast of great spirit and might. Use Beorn’s innate ability to help you search your skill deck for The First Beorning , then prepare it to transform into The Great Bear . As part of this transformation, you will actually swap Beorn’s character card, equipped items, and plastic figure to those of the Great Bear, which means Beorn is essentially two heroes in one!

Though he cannot equip normal items while in his bear form, there can be no mistake that Beorn is a powerful figure on the battlefield. With a whopping 5 might, Beorn can use his Rending Claws to reliably rip through enemies, and his Hoary Coat lets him shrug off even the most gruesome of injuries. When you are ready to shed your bear form, take advantage of The Great Bear’s extra cost to interact and discard The First Beorning from play to walk as a man once more.

Even while he isn’t a bear, Beorn is a versatile hero. Use Beast Tongue in tandem with Beorn’s innate ability to scout for free and gain another action, then attack an enemy as a Friend of Bees to stun them. If you defeat them, you can use The Day Will Come to scout again, allowing you to fish for The First Beorning if you feel like donning the guise of The Great Bear once more.

Beorn’s affinity with the wilderness makes him an excellent guide, which also happens to be one of the six new roles added in the Spreading War expansion! Point your allies to The Way Forward to help everyone move further toward the goal, then use the Great Hound to take even further advantage of Beorn’s innate ability.

A Growing Threat
Whether you serve as a Guide for your allies or help defend them as another role—such as Shieldmaiden—your mission in Spreading War remains the same: protect the kingdoms of Gondor and Rohan from the Enemy’s mercenary onslaught. The campaign of this expansion spans the length of a year in-game, and the decisions you and your fellow heroes make across all four seasons will shape the twists and turns of the story. At certain story beats, you will be able to travel between the two kingdoms, but choosing when to do so will have lasting effects on how the campaign plays out. Will your Fellowship focus on bolstering one kingdom’s defenses over the other? Or will you prioritize gathering information and investigating the mastermind behind the threat?

These adventures will bring you face-to-face with the aforementioned mercenaries and other dark forces as you travel between Gondor and Rohan, and the longer it takes you to find the orchestrator of the assaults, the harder they will become to repel. In the spring, the mercenary threat is small and easier to handle, but by the time autumn rolls around they will be truly formidable. New enemy types like the War Oliphaunt, Soldier, and Fell Beast all behave in ways that shake up the flow of combat, such as allowing other enemies more movement or inflicting the new banes on the players—we’ll go into more detail on those at a later date.

Against the Tide
You and your Fellowship will have your work cut out for you as you toil to defend two kingdoms from their relentless, brutal attackers. And behind it all, a dark mastermind manipulates the events toward their own mysterious, shadowy ends. Will you be able to halt the spread of war? Build a new Fellowship and rise against the darkness with the Spreading War expansion for Journeys in Middle-earth!

In XCOM: The Board Game, you and up to three friends assume the roles of the leaders of the elite, international organization known as XCOM. It is your job to defend humanity, quell the rising panic, and turn back the alien invasion.

Where the world’s militaries have failed to stand against the alien invaders, you must succeed. To do so, you must make strategic use of the resources available to you. You must launch Interceptors to shoot down alien UFOs, assign soldiers to key missions, research alien technology, and use that technology to defend your base, all while you try to keep the world from collapsing just long enough that you can coordinate one final mission to repel the invaders for good.

Innovative Digital Enhancement
The most notable aspect of XCOM: The Board Game is the way that it incorporates a free and innovative digital app into the core of its gameplay, then uses the app to promote a unique play experience unlike anything you and your friends have previously encountered in a board game. This digital companion will be available both as a downloadable app and as an online tool.

The app’s primary function is to coordinate the escalating alien invasion, randomly selecting from one of five different invasion plans. Each invasion plan represents a general outline that the alien commanders will use to coordinate the arrival of new UFOs, plan strikes against your base, and respond to your successes or failures as it seeks to conquer Earth. The app manages all of these tasks and heighten’s the game’s tension as it forces you to respond in real-time. Then, after you move quickly to coordinate your response, you engage the enemy in the untimed resolution phase and feed the results to the app. Based upon these results, the app launches the invasion's next strikes.

Additionally, the app teaches you the rules, controls the information that your satellites provide you, and tracks the progress of your resistance efforts, even as it allows you to enjoy the game at any of three levels of difficulty: Easy, Normal, or Hard.

The use of this app does more than simply streamline your play experience and track your turns in real-time. It also permits a uniquely dynamic turn structure. While the variety of game phases remains the same from round to round, the order in which you and your friends must play through them may change, as may the number of a given phase.

As a result, while you’ll want to know where UFOs appear before you deploy your Interceptors, the alien invaders may be able to disrupt your satellite intel and force you to deploy your Interceptors on patrol with limited or no knowledge of the UFOs current whereabouts. Similarly, you may be forced to think about the costs of resolving the world’s crises before you know how many troops you’ll need to commit to your base defense.

The effect of the app, then, is to immerse you deep into the dramatic tension at the core of XCOM: The Board Game, and it ensures that the game presents a challenging and cooperative (or solo) experience like no other. Just like the XCOM department heads that you represent, you’ll need to keep cool heads in order to prevail.

Inside XCOM Strategic Command
XCOM’s resistance efforts are spearheaded by its four leaders, each of which is represented by one of the game’s player roles: Commander, Chief Scientist, Central Officer, and Squad Leader.

Commander
The Commander is responsible to manage XCOM’s budget and must be foresightful enough to know when best to access the organization’s emergency funding and how best to allocate it.

Additionally, the Commander makes the tough decisions about where to assign XCOM’s limited number of Interceptors to global defense. Wherever you commit your Interceptors, you have a chance of destroying UFOs and slowing the spread of panic. Wherever you don’t commit your Interceptors, fear and anxiety are bound to run rampant.

Chief Scientist
If you and XCOM are to have any chance of successfully repelling the alien invaders, you’ll need better technology. The Chief Scientist’s responsibilities include studying advanced technology, learning how to harness it, manufacturing better weapons and armor, and equipping the rest of the organization with the tools they need to survive.

Of course, only a limited number of scientists possess the necessary training and intellect to quickly dissect, analyze, and replicate alien technology. Part of your job as Chief Scientist, then, is not only to decide how best to direct the organization’s research efforts but also to prioritize between them, allocating more scientists to the projects you decide will best benefit the war effort.

Central Officer
The Central Officer serves as the communications relay between XCOM and the outside world. This means you manage the organization’s satellite network, and it is your job to ensure that the organization remains alert to potential threats, communicates and coordinates its efforts effectively between branches, and scrambles as many alien transmissions as possible.

Succeed, and you’ll reduce the number of UFOs in orbit. Fail, and you’ll suffer communications blackouts that will force you to act blindly in the midst of a war, the likes of which Earth has never known.

Additionally, the Central Officer communicates all of the information provided by the game’s digital app to the players. The clock is always running, so it’s vital that you share all relevant information quickly and clearly.

Squad Leader
In the end, XCOM needs boots on the ground to confront the alien invaders, and it’s the Squad Leader’s job to ensure that the right troops are tackling the right missions. As the invasion escalates, you must assemble strike teams to meet the aliens in battle. Simultaneously, you must assign soldiers to defend the XCOM base, and you’ll need to strike an effective balance. If your base falls, so do you. So does the earth.

Still, you need to succeed at missions to win. Each mission you complete brings you closer to uncovering a means of launching one final, fatal blow against the alien invaders.

All four player roles are vital to XCOM’s success, and you and your friends must divide them among yourselves in every game. Your soldiers won’t succeed without the upgrades your scientists can research, nor will you be able to launch successful Interceptor strikes against UFOs unless you acquire good intel from your satellite network.

Can You Find a Way to Defeat the Unknown Foe?
